Being locked out is stressful. It's usually late, you're tired, and your brain goes into panic mode. Here's what to do — and more importantly, what not to do.
If You're Locked Out of Your Home
- Stay calm and check all other entry points — back doors, garage, unlocked windows
- Call a trusted neighbor or family member who might have a spare key
- If you rent, call your landlord or building manager — they have a legal obligation to help
- Call a professional locksmith. Do not attempt to force the door — you will damage the frame
- Never use a credit card to try to open a deadbolt — it only works in movies, and only on privacy latches
If You're Locked Out of Your Car
- Check all doors and the trunk — one may be unlocked
- Call your roadside assistance provider (AAA, insurance, etc.) if you have coverage
- Call a locksmith — they are usually faster and cheaper than roadside assistance
- Do not break a window unless it is a genuine emergency (extreme heat with a child or pet inside)
What NOT to Do
- Don't Google the first "cheap locksmith" you find — bait-and-switch scams are common
- Don't try to kick your door in — you'll break the frame, not the lock
- Don't leave a window open "just in case" — this teaches a bad habit
- Don't post on social media that you're locked out — it signals your home is unoccupied
